Pancake Day, the day we here at Sofood! look forward to most after Christmas. Marking the beginning of lent for some and for others, just a good excuse for a family competition of pancake tossing and mess making.
Traditional pancakes are made with basic ingredients but that doesn't mean yours have to be boring! We have come up with a collection of different ways to broaden your pancake making reportoire and to make sure there is something for every member of the family, regardless of age or dietary requirements, to have a flippin' great pancake day....
1. The Savoury
Now I know a lot of pancake purists out there will turn their noses up at the suggestion of filling a perfectly good pancake with savoury ingredients, but don't knock it until you have tried it. The way I see it is if you have a savoury pancake to start it counts as 'proper' dinner which gives you guilt free license to tuck into as many sweet pancakes as you like!
Here is a particularly tasty one for you to try Garlic Mushroom and Gruyere Pancake but we've had anything from leftover chilli to a full English on a pancake, you just have to think outside the box!
2. Healthy Flipside
Most of us associate pancake day with sweet indulgence, as the origins of pancake day are to empty the larder of any rich foods before the start of lent on Ash Wednesday. However, if you are trying to stick to a healthy regime, there are plenty of alternative ways of making your pancakes to keep you on track and even enhance your healthy eating plan. Substituting the white flour in pancakes by using buckwheat or protein powder is a good start, or you could try some of these Healthy Red Velvet Beetroot Pancakes we have found. If you really can't go without a standard pancake recipe then consider healthy toppings instead, greek yoghurt and fresh fruit is a favourite in our house or why not even try and make your own healthy Homemade Nutella
3. Creative Kids
Kids love pancake day more than anyone, and as long as they are supervised by an adult there is no reason not to get them involved in the prep, making and topping too! (Apart from the considerable tidy up after!) There are so many fun ways to 'kidify' pancakes these days, from easy Animal Pancakes to full on Pancake Art And the baby doesn't need to miss out either, these great Banana Pancakes are a fab healthy weaning food for the youngest ones in your family.
4. Gluten Free and Gorgeous
As we mentioned before, pancakes don't have to be made exclusively with white plain flour, there are so many other tried and tested methods these days that mean even if you are gluten intolerant or just want to beat the bloat, you can still partake in delicious yumminess on pancake day. If you have gluten free flour you can try these Gluten Free Pancakes and if you want to go completely flour free try these Wheat Free, Gluten Free and Carb Free alternative.
5. Pimped Up To The Max
So we have covered everything so far apart from the obvious, the naughty and utterly sublime. For anyone who wants to go the extra mile to create the ultimate instagram worthy
